Wonderland Cake by Terrauh Wonderland Cake by Terrauh
My first attempt at edible art. I made this cake for my best friend's birthday this week. She loves Alice in Wonderland. I haven't made a fancy cake but one other time and that was about 12 years ago, so forgive the crudeness of it, but I tried my best!

Everything is edible but the flowers. I bought rolled fondant and coloring and made the pieces for it. the cake is white with confetti sprinkles inside. Buttercream holds it together, and then some homemade fondant glaze for the texture on top of the buttercream.

This looks really good especially for your 1st/2nd time.
Constructive Criticism: I would suggest using fondant instead of buttercream to cover the cake and then put all the decorations on top. It just makes the cake look more refined and neater. It looks excellent though. Job well done :pat:
I hope I don't sound mean!

Thanks, and no problem, this was actually my first cake ever a few years back, so I am a lot more skilled with fondant now :) I still think it tastes better without the fondant, but you really can't beat it for looks and design.

Yeah, it does taste better without fondant, and as you just said the presentation is excellent with the fondant. I watch a lot of Ace of Cakes and I got inspired by that and also my nan used to be a cake decorator. So every now and then I make small cakes for fun. Fondant is also sometimes quite hard to perfect though. Trying to get it without air bubbles or cracks and just the right size and thickness! :D

P.S. Have you ever seen or read The Hunger Games?

:) Haven't seen or read Hunger Games yet. It takes me a while to get to new book series because reading time always takes away from painting time.

Yeah, it does. It takes away from my drawing and photography time :D
But when you have spare time, I would recommend reading The Hunger Games. It is a really great series. Well, I loved it anyway. It may not be your cup of tea. :)

I hope when I start making cakes that I can have such a natural knack as you! This looks so professional, I would never believe it's your 2nd try!

Thanks so much! I have actually gotten a lot of requests for cakes now through the girls at work with this! It's all practice for decorating my wedding cake which I will be making myself this Autumn. :D

Gorgeous! Especially for being a first attempt. The details astound me.

Just curious, what did the fondant taste like? I'd like to decorate a cake with fondant but some people have told me they hate the taste of it.

Thank you :)
As for the fondant...I didn't much care for it. the kind I bought was unflavored so I had to add almond extract and roll it in powdered sugar...even then it wasn't completely tasteful. Luckily my friend has two young girls in the house who delighted in picking off the fondant decorations and eating them without caring what they tasted like.

Ah, okay. Since there's icing underneath I guess it doesn't really matter; it's just there for looks. :)

Wonderful cake... the "crudeness" of it makes it all the better, I think.
